Summary
This position is responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, and personal accountability in the execution of the tasks and duties performed by the Office of Information Technology and supporting the College of Engineering and Applied Science (EAS). The position will be the primary point of contact for EAS third tier support and will also support OIT and EAS joint mission on research computing. The position will work and communicate closely with IT customers who include IT specialists, engineering and computer science faculty, staff and students. The position is working in a fast-paced environment where the infrastructure and support needs are always changing. The position will perform duties with guidance and direction from the EAS IT Program Manager and will follow IT policy for implementation across the college, adhering to long-term IT strategy for both OIT and EAS. This position works within the Office of Information Technology, however primarily supports EAS to streamline workloads and share resources. The position supports faculty, staff and students within EAS.

Summary

Essential Functions
The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Monitor and respond to ticket requests, providing solutions and document solutions provided for future reference.
- Coordinate system changes with customers and other system areas
- Perform performance analysis, proactive troubleshooting, continual improvement and capacity planning for virtualized and research environments.
- Perform monitoring, troubleshooting, maintenance, and upgrading the EAS IT virtual environment, which may include VMWare infrastructure.
- Setup and support various heterogeneous Linux and Windows operating systems including Linux single sign-on to Microsoft Active Directory.
- Setup and support of various engineering software applications on heterogeneous systems.
- Image and prepare lab computers for EAS.
- Work closely with researchers on custom hardware and software to fulfill the research computing tasks for both OIT and EAS.
- Integrate and test systems to conform to user and vendor requirements from start to finish including racking or setting up a variety of hardware, cabling, firmware updates, OS installation, and applications.
- Perform hardware troubleshooting and problem resolution, including coordinating repairs with vendors.
- Create necessary documentation of any IT actions, to include processes, infrastructure changes, troubleshooting, upgrades, lessons-learned, and improvement.
- Work with various computational and/or research computing software and hardware including but not limited to HPC, job schedulers, cluster management, container technology, GPU cluster administration, AI/ML tools, scripting languages.
- Experience in the setup and support various heterogeneous Linux and Windows operating systems
- Experience with VMware infrastructure
- Experience with Microsoft Active Directory, specifically in the areas of security group and group policy and Linux authentication protocols
- Experience using and troubleshooting various hardware and software programs used for processing data
- Linux and MS Windows system administration
- Knowledge of HPC, AI/ML, GPU, and networking technologies concepts
- Knowledge of IT security best practices
- Understanding of image and cloning software tools and techniques
- Excellent written and verbal skills
- Exceptional customer services skills
- Demonstrated experience working in a diverse and multi-cultural environment that is committed to diversity and equality in education
Qualifications
Qualifications
- To be considered for this role you must possess a Bachelor's Degree, OR the full-time equivalent of 4 years of work experience within an IT or research computing environment
- To be considered for this role, you must also have greater than one year experience in an IT systems administration, or demonstrated experience in handling customer requests within an IT or research computing environment
- 3 years' experience in IT systems administration, including at least 1 year experience in the setup and support of various heterogeneous Linux and Windows operating systems is highly desirable
- Experience in higher education or research environment
- Experience with GIT, Ansible, Chef, Salt or Puppet
- The ideal candidate possesses a certification in Red Hat Certified System Administrator
